Territory
Black and white lemurs mark their territory by screaming and marking it with scent glands. They have scent glands on their wrists. These lemurs rub leaves, branches, and/or fruit with their scent to mark their territory.
Movement
The black and white lemurs move in a handful of ways. They walk, run, leap, and climb. They walk or run on tree branches or on the rainforest floor. They cling to branches with all fours. The lemurs leap with significant accuracy and are very nimble climbers. Black and white ruffed lemurs hang upside down to get fruits.
I'M FLYING!!! |
Black and white lemurs are very social creatures and live in groups. Groups are based on either family or food. Family groups are groups composed of related lemurs and are centered around a single mated pair. These groups include around 2-16 lemurs. Groups can also be centered around food. When there is plenty of food, the lemurs live in gourps of around 26 members; when there is a little food, the lemurs live in groups of 3-4. There are many males and females in a group. Males frequently change groups whereas females rarely change groups. Females are the leaders of the group. Females choose their own mate, have first access to foraging activities, and defend their territory more than males. Did you know that having females in charge is unique only to this suborder of primates?
Active Hours
Black and white lemurs are diurnal but they are only awake in the mornings and late afternoons. they are an arboreal species which means that they live their life in trees. These lemurs sleep in hollow trees. They spend their days eating, traveling, and resting high up in the forest canopy.
