Range & Habitat

The whole lemur species have originated from the island of Madagascar, which is part of Africa.

RANGE

The Black and White Ruffed Lemurs live in the eastern rainforest of Madagascar, found usually from around sea level-1350 meters above sea level.  They were introduced and resides on Nosy Mangebe.  Their range is south of the Anove River until Betampona and Zahamena National Park and extends all the way until the Bay of Antongil.  The black and white ruffed lemur's range might overlap with the Red Ruffed Lemurs, separated bye the Antainambalana River.

HABITAT
The Black and White Ruffed Lemurs live in coastal rainforests, mainly the primary, secondary, and mid-altitude rainforests.  They live in the canopy layer by scent making, which is called arboreal.  All lemurs, including the Black and White Ruffed Lemurs are tree dwellers that inhabit the we evergreen on the eastern coast of Madagascar.

Why We Live Here
Madagascar is the only place on the planet which is suitable for the black and white lemurs and any other lemur. This is the story of their evolution.

Lemurs evolved when there was one super-continent. Lemurs are one of the oldest primates, they evolved before monkeys. Lemurs are quite intelligent but they are not smarter than the newly evolved monkeys. When monkeys evolved, they took over all of the resources that the lemurs had and many types of lemurs died out. However, there were still lemurs on the part of the super-continent that would be the island of Madagascar. Madagascar split off from the super-continent before the monkeys could get there. The monkeys were not able to reach Madagascar and so the lemurs were safe on their island. They can only survive on this island of Madagascar. With their habitat getting destructed, there will be nowhere else to move to. Help save them by looking at our conservation efforts tab.
